  • Who Am I?

Gary "Doc" EvansProfessor of Leadership Communication and Intercultural Communication; Bachelor’s from Wayne State University; Master’s from University of Michigan; Ph.D. from the University of Michigan

It was my destiny to become a teacher since both my parents were teachers. Although, I do remember my father telling me not to become a teacher because he struggled supporting his family on a teacher’s salary. However, I wanted to help society become a better place for all humankind and I knew I could do that through teaching communication skills.

I have spent most of my career studying other cultures and how people interact with each other. Interracial communication is a passion of mine because understanding each other is the first step in accepting and respecting each other.

I established the Evans-Strand Peace Award to recognize individuals or groups that have made significant contributions to the better understanding and acceptance of diversity at Eastern Michigan University. I feel it is very important to give back and put your money where your heart is. For me, my heart is here at Eastern. Supporting and teaching our students adds excitement to my life and feeds my soul.
